Quote of the Day

February 24, 2011

“Things they should really warn you about before you go to SLP school: You will have your gag reflex tested at 8 in the morning.”

Angela S (Current SLP student)

Now, if you’re thinking about applying to the University of Alberta’s SLP program and are reading this, Don’t Panic! It’s not nearly as bad as it sounds! And its all part of learning how to administer the very useful oral mechanism exam, which helps you assess a client’s ability to produce speech. More specifically, the gag reflex is tested to help determine if there is a problem with the neural input to the soft palate and back of the throat. So, the moral of the story is “Don’t be afraid! You’ll probably have it tested; but, look on the bright side, you’ll also get to test it on your fellow classmates!”
