Laughing for a Cause!

Committee Members present Cynthia Pon of the ICAN center with the money they raised.

If you haven’t already realized from previous posts, the SLP Class of 2013 never really seems to stop promoting our field. On July 12, 2012, the Public Awareness and Charities Committee hosted an evening of comedy at the Comic Strip in West Edmonton Mall to raise money for an incredible local charity. Funds from the evening went to the ICAN center, a specialty service located at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital. The center provides services to help outfit clients with assistive technology that can help them communicate and participate in functional aspects of daily living. Committee member Angele Lamontagne explained their decision to support this organization.

“We decided to go with ICAN as we wanted to support a smaller local charity and ensure all the money we raised was going directly for public support rather than administration. The ICAN centre is a great cause to support as it really makes a difference in the lives of people with severe disabilities. One of the main areas the money raised will go to is the equipment library, which allows clients to ‘test out’ devices in order to find a best fit. ”

In true speechie fashion, the committee successfully organized and executed this event without a hitch, raising $1152.00 for the ICAN center. In addition to the hilarity provided by the comics, there were door prize and raffle draws as well.

Lamontagne, on behalf of the committee, wanted to thank the sponsors who helped make the night possible. These included the Comic Strip who graciously donated 25 tickets and 50% of remaining tickets, King’s Fine Jewellery, Sobey’s College Plaza, Cook County Saloon/Von’s Steakhouse, the Coppens family and the Schmidt family.

Well done speechies!
