Calling all future Speechies!!

September 14, 2012

If you are reading this blog, you are either a student in the program, a current SLP, or someone who dreams of one day becoming an amazing speech pathologist! (Or my family members, who I force to read every post I write!) Falling into one of the above categories means that you have a passion for, or, at the very least, a budding interest in the field of Speech Pathology. Reading this and other speech pathology related blogs and articles is one way to get your Speechie fix, but why not experience the cutting edge, latest developments and research in the field yourself by checking out a great professional development opportunity coming up at the University of Alberta?

The Organization of Alberta Students in Speech is excited to invite anyone interested in learning more about the field of speech pathology to the 2012 OASIS Conference. The theme for the conference is the “The Future of the Field”, and offers attendees the opportunity to listen to talks on topics such as Neuroplasticity, Transgender Voice Therapy, and Assistive Technology. Many great speakers and researchers will be on hand to share their exciting research and new developments in the field. There will also be a booth fair, where great organizations from around the city will be providing information on volunteer and future job opportunities. A panel of clients, including parents, adults with aphasia and dysarthria, and a young adult who received therapy for stuttering will be part of a special Client Perspectives session, where they will share stories of their SLP experiences, which will be a great learning experience for students and SLPs alike! And did I mention the excellent refreshments and lunch that will be available?

When asked about the upcoming conference, Conference Committee Chair, Allaina McMurrer, had this to say: “We are very excited about this year’s OASIS conference. We’ve organized some great sessions and we’re hoping it’ll be a wonderful experience for everyone there.”

The conference will take place at the Edmonton Clinic Health Academy Building on September 29th, 2012, from 9am to 3:30 pm. For more information and to register check out the OASIS website  or email uaspeech@ualberta.ca for more information.

See you all there!
